Viktor Medvedchuk, Ukrainian opposition leader has been reportedly arrested.

President Zelensky shared photos of his handcuffed rival Viktor Medvedchuk, while the head of Ukraine’s security services stated that “not a single traitor will escape punishment.”

Kiev had earlier charged Medvedchuk with treason, but he allegedly escaped house arrest.

Who is Viktor Medvedchuk?

1. Heads second largest party in Ukrainian parliament, “Opposition Platform – For Life”

2. Stood against the 2014 Kiev Maidan

3. Western media labels Medvedchuk as “Putin’s ally”

4. Polls in 2021 showed “Opposition Platform – For Life” overtaking Zelensky’s ‘Servant of the People’ as the most popular party in the state

5. In retaliation, Zelensky seemingly closed media outlets associated with Medvedchuk and arrested him on “treason” charges

Though, Medvedchuk has denied accusations of being “pro-Russian,” insisting his party represents millions of ordinary Ukrainians.

In February 2021, he accused Zelensky of seeking to establish a dictatorship in Ukraine and suppress the legally elected opposition.
