Two staff of Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden in Mkpa have been arraigned for demanding for their 16 months Salary from the state government.

The arraigned staff are Eyo Okon Eminue and Mrs Iquo Ebong Okon. They were arraigned for defamation of Acting Vice Chancellor of Akwa-Ibom University, Prof. Eno Ibang.

This is coming less than 24 hours when a broadcast Journalist kurfe Carter was also arrested by the state government.

Their charges read:

Eyo Okon Eminue (aged 39) and Iquo Ebong Okon (aged 46) were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on charges of criminal defamation of the character of Prof. Eno Ibanga, Acting Vice Chancellor of the Akwa Ibom State.

The duo have, in what appears to be a carefully calculated plan, made countless defamatory publications on Facebook against the person of Prof. Eno Ibanga.

Eyo Eminue and Iquo Ebong Okon on the 20th day of March, 2020 did defame the character of one Prof. Eno Ibanga by publishing on a Facebook page created and run by both of you with the name: “SOS – Akwa Ibom State University/Government” for everyone to read the following statement: “Emperor of AKSU, you intend to embezzle the money meant to be used in paying for hazard for the staff of AKSU.

It was also gathered that about 279 staff of the University had an axe to grind with the management of the state varsity following the non-payment of their 16-month salaries arrears, running into several millions of naira.

The distraught staff under the aegis of Concerned Akwa Ibom University Staff accused the Vice Chancellor of promoting the culture nepotism, bad administration and being insensitive to their plight despite the fact that the State Government had directed him to defray the backlog.
