Tribute to Chief Sylvanus Ezima Nwonye (aka Rainbow)

253

On the morning of April 5, 2017, we received the shocking news that Chief Sylvanus Ezima Nwonye, aka, the “People’s Chief,” had passed away under mysterious circumstances. The cold of that Wednesday morning seemed to echo the dark reality of his forced departure, leaving our family and community in a state of perpetual disruption.

Chief Nwonye was not just a leader but an emblem of strength and dedication, much like an Iroko tree that was cut down in its prime by acts of hatred and malice. He held the prestigious titles of “Umunna Bu Ike of Amaogudu-Okpanku” and “Onowu Ndigbo of Ijebu-Ode,” honors that underscored his commitment to the progress and welfare of his people, both in Nigeria and abroad.

His influence was vast, touching both politics and economy, always advocating for peace and integrity. He was a guiding light, nicknamed ‘Rainbow’ for his ability to illuminate paths for others to succeed. His role was so significant that he was considered the next in line to become the king of Okpanku, serving as the right-hand man to the current king. His charisma won the hearts of the people more than any wealth or connections could.

Chief Nwoye will forever remain in our heart:
