Tragic stampede at Gombe Eid prayer ground leaves two dead, 20 Injured

A joyous Eid celebration quickly turned tragic on Sunday morning when a deadly stampede erupted at Gombe’s main prayer ground.

As rush hour approached, panic ensued, leading to chaos that would result in unimaginable loss for families.

Consequently, the chaos claimed the lives of two children and injured 20 others, emphasizing the urgent need for increased safety measures.

Such tragedies during large gatherings highlight vulnerabilities and underscore the responsibility of organizers to ensure crowd safety.

The incident occurred around 10:45 AM when thousands of worshippers, including many women and children, hurried to exit the venue after prayers.

Confusion spread rapidly, causing the crowd to overwhelm exits and leading to the tragic stampede.

In their haste, the crowd became overcrowded, resulting in the unfortunate stampede and devastating injuries.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the crowd surged toward a bottleneck at the exit gate.

The scorching heat and limited access points worsened the chaos, leaving vulnerable attendees trampled in the confusion.

Emergency responders raced to the scene, rushing 15 victims to Zainab Bulkachuwa Hospital and seven others to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

Despite medical efforts, two young girls—four-year-olds Aisha Salisu Ahmed and Maryam Abdullahi Gwani—succumbed to their injuries.

Authorities quickly mobilized to address the crisis. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya pledged to cover all medical bills for the injured, offering solace to grieving families.

Meanwhile, the Gombe State Police Command expressed deep condolences, emphasizing the need for better crowd control measures.

DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the police spokesperson, urged event organizers to ensure all entry and exit points remain fully operational during large gatherings to prevent future tragedies.

The stampede has cast a shadow over Eid festivities, leaving the community in mourning.

As investigations continue, local leaders are calling for stricter safety protocols at public events to protect lives.

The heartbreaking loss of two children serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved infrastructure and crowd management during religious and social gatherings.

This incident underscores the importance of preparedness during mass events, particularly in high-traffic venues.

Moving forward, residents hope authorities will implement lasting solutions to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

For now, Gombe mourns—united in grief but determined to ensure safer celebrations in the future.
