Super Falcons suffer narrow defeat against Brazil in Olympic opener
The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Brazil in their opening Group C fixture at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Thursday.
The match, held at the Bordeaux Stadium in France, saw Brazil secure victory with a 37th-minute goal from Gabi Nunes, which was enough to deny the Falcons any points in their first game of the tournament.
Despite the loss, the Super Falcons displayed determination and created several scoring opportunities early in the game.
Rasheedat Ajibade, leading the team, showcased her skill with some excellent runs down the left flank, though her teammates struggled to capitalize on her deliveries into the box.
The Super Falcons fought hard after the interval, but their efforts were largely thwarted by Brazil’s solid defense.
Meanwhile, tactical changes and fresh substitutions aimed at finding an equalizer, Nigeria could not breach the Brazilian backline.
Next up for Nigeria is a challenging match against Spain, the reigning world champions, scheduled for July 28. The Super Falcons will then face Japan on July 31.
In other Group C action, Spain defeated Japan 2-1. In Group B, the US triumphed over Zambia 3-0, while France delivered a commanding 3-0 win against Colombia in Group A.
