The Sudanese Armed Forces confirmed their troops entered Wad Madani on Saturday morning. Consequently, they have successfully recaptured the city from rebel forces. Senior military sources informed Sky News about this significant advance.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the general command of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) released an official statement. It confirmed that troops had entered Wad Madani and were actively working to eliminate remaining rebel pockets within the city. Furthermore, the SAF indicated plans for continued advancement.
Additionally, the army shared a video appearing to show troops within Wad Madani, the capital of Sudan’s El Gezira state. This development follows recent accusations by the US against the RSF of committing genocide in Sudan.
At that time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the RSF and its aligned militias had systematically targeted men, boys, and even infants based on ethnicity. He also highlighted that women and girls from specific ethnic groups faced brutal sexual violence.
The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023 when the SAF clashed with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum. This fighting quickly spread throughout the country, leaving Sudan divided between these two warring factions. As a result, the city emptied, and civilians suffered from food and water shortages amidst ongoing violence.
The RSF has received support from the United Arab Emirates via Chad and maintains connections with the Russian paramilitary group Wagner. Conversely, the SAF is primarily backed by Iran, Egypt, and Ukraine. Despite numerous attempts to negotiate a ceasefire, fighting continues unabated, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties.
Currently, more than 11 million people are displaced, with 30 million requiring humanitarian assistance. Unfortunately, several mediation efforts have failed to establish a mechanism for humanitarian access or create any pauses in the fighting.
