A group, the Voters Rights International Nigeria (VRIN), has kicked against the proposed representation of the country at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of England, taking place on Monday, September 19, by Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

VRIN made the remarks in a press statement signed by human rights lawyer and President of Voters Rights International Nigeria, Dr. Jezie Ekejiuba.

Dr. Ekejiuba noted that Nigeria deserves a better representation at the funeral by President Muhammadu Buhari and not by the Vice President

In the statement, dated September 17, 2022. he said:

“The attention of the Voters Rights International Nigeria (VRIN) has been drawn to the news circulating online in the Social and Orthodox Media that Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has jetted out to London to represent Nigeria at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of England. taking place on Monday September,19 2022.

“We state without mincing words that Nigeria deserves representation at the Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral by no less a personality of Nigeria’s Head of State, President Muhammadu Buhari and not by the Vice President.

“We demand to know from the Presidency why Vice President Osinbajo should represent Nigeria at the high-level funeral ceremony attended by all the World Powers, given Nigeria’s position in the comity of African nations.”

Wondering what may have influenced the decision behind Osinbajo’s representation, Ekejiuba asked: “Is our President too old or sick to attend the funeral personally?”

He stressed: “This is a rare State funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of England billed to be attended by almost all the world presidents and heads of state.

“Why Vice President?” he queried.

As the 2023 Presidential election approaches, Ekejiuba advised Nigerian electorate to learn a lesson from this and consider voting into power only healthy and young candidates rather than sick and old candidates.

This, he noted, will help avoid denying Nigeria energetic representation in the comity of nations.  Read more.
