President Tinubu swears in Kekere-Ekun as 23rd CJN
President Bola Tinubu on Monday, officially sworn in Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Justice Kekere-Ekun, the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, was sworn in following her confirmation by the Senate.
The ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja. Four former chief justices of the Federation, including the first female Justice, Aloma Mukhtar, the President of the Court of Appeal, and other heads of the judiciary divisions were present.
Mr Tinubu underscored the pivotal role of the judiciary in safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
Born on May 7, 1958, in London, United Kingdom, Kekere-Ekun’s journey in law began at the University of Lagos, where she earned her law degree in 1980.
After completing her studies at the Nigeria Law School, she was called to the Nigerian Bar on July 10, 1981. She furthered her academic pursuit at the London School of Economics, obtaining a Master of Laws in 1983.
Kekere-Ekun’s illustrious career in the judiciary began as a Senior Magistrate II in the Lagos State Judiciary. She later served as the chairman of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal, Zone II, Ikeja from 1996 to 1999.
In 2004, she was appointed to the Court of Appeal, and in July 2013, she rose to the esteemed position of Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Her great contributions to the Nigerian judiciary were recognized in 2022 when she was awarded the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
