As Joe Biden claimed victory in Pennsylvania and secured his bid to the White House, Harris cemented her place in history, as the first woman, and the first woman of color to be named vice president of the U.S.
“We did it. We did it Joe,” an overcome-with-emotion Harris said on a phone call with Biden.
Harris’ nomination to the VP spot, which comes on the heels of a year riddled with protests against racial injustice and police brutality, marks a monumental political step for people of color.
The widespread protests and sheer size of the Black Lives Matter movement harkens back the civil rights era, when Rockwell’s painting captured the integration of a previously segregated school system.
Nearly six decades later, Harris became the first African American woman and the first Asian American person to don a major party’s presidential ticket.

“This election is about so much more than @JoeBiden or me. It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us,” she wrote in a separate tweet. “Let’s get started.”
