Police Puts Public Spaces Under Surveillance To Forestall Future Protests

Henceforth, no public spaces must be left unpoliced in the country going by directive from the Inspector General of Police, Mohammad Adamu, elombah.com has gathered.

The online newspaper also gathered that this is part of developments in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest across Nigeria. The IGP also said that the move is also to occupy public spaces to forestall rising crimes in the country.

Adamu stated this on Thursday while addressing newsmen after declaring open a retreat, organised by the Nigeria Police for Senior Management Team of the Force at the National Institute for Police Studies (NIPS), Jabi, Abuja.

The IGP who also revealed that, the Force has acquired more equipments and materials to secure the country assured of improved security, especially in the Southern parts of the country.

According to him, “We have asked all our personnel to be out there, occupy public spaces and make sure that criminals don’t have a field day in what they are doing.

“And they have heeded to that call. Now you can see that, where we had issues of insecurity as a result of #EndSARS, especially in the Southern part of the country, the thing has fizzled out, because officers have come back to do their jobs. They have occupied public spaces now and its being effective.

“We capacited our personnel in terms of training and just recently, as a result of the #EndSAS protest, we have acquired more equipments and more materials that we need to secure this country.

“Every member of the Nigeria Police Force is energetic, is up and doing. What you required of him if you give him the necessary tools, just go home and sleep.”

While speaking on the import of the retreat, the IGP said, this is not the first time the Force under his leadership has organised this type of retreat.

“This is not the first time we are are doing this, when we came on board in 2019, we had the same retreat in Lagos but most of the members of the management team had gone on retirement and we now have new ones.

“So, it is very important that we come back with this new management for them to be able to know what they are supposed to do.

“We have a new management team now that is composed of newly promoted Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) and we believe, they must be conversant with strategies that they should apply in order to achieve the mission and vision of the Nigeria Police and invariably secure this country.

“If they are aware of what they are supposed to do strategically, when they get back to their departments, they will be able to bring their principal officers and also give them direction on the strategy to be implemented in order to achieve the mission and vision of the Nigeria Police.”

The Nigeria Police being a lead agency in internal security, Adamu noted that, it is incumbent on the Force to provide security of life and property in Nigeria, and there must be strategy to achieve that.

“As you are fully aware there must be certain direction for every organisation, and we know that every organisation has mission and vision; And after having those mission and vision must come up with strategies to achieve them.”

In his welcome address, the Director General (DG) of NIPS, Dr Ogunshaki said, “it’s a workshop where every DIG is expected to contribute to what will be presented to the police management team.”
