Police officer kills driver over refusal to give N100 bribe in Anambra
A police operative attached to Otuocha Area Command in Anambra East Local Government Area, has shot and killed a commercial bus driver following an alleged argument over a N100 bribe.
According to media reports, the officer fired at the driver during a confrontation over the bribe request at a checkpoint in the area.
The sad incident took place on Saturday, November 2, 2024, according to an eyewitness, a fellow commercial driver simply identified as Kamtochukwu.
“The young man was shot dead during an altercation between him and the police officers over the payment of a N100 bribe. During the argument, one of the police officers quickly pulled the trigger and shot him dead,” Kamtochukwu told reporters.
“The young man was also a commercial vehicle operator, and his vehicle was just ahead of mine in the queue a few metres from the checkpoint. We were waiting in the queue at the checkpoint when we suddenly heard the sound of a gunshot”, he added.
NewsBand understand that the shooting infuriated local youths, who reportedly attempted to confront the officers before they left the scene of the shooting.
While speaking on the development, Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesman of Anambra State police command, confirmed that the officer involved has been disarmed and taken into custody for further investigation and disciplinary measures.
“The police officer involved has been identified. He has been disarmed and detained for further investigations and internal disciplinary procedures,” Ikenga stated.
