Police foil terrorist plot in Niger, uncover cache of explosive devices
Nigerian Police have foiled a major plot in Niger State, uncovering a large cache of explosive devices, including bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), that were buried across various locations in the state.
The discovery was made by the Niger State Police Command as part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations executed between 2021 and 2023, in collaboration with other security agencies.
According to the police spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, the operations have led to the recovery of a substantial number of explosive devices that were suspected to have been concealed by terrorists and bandits.
The cache includes several dangerous items, such as four pipe-borne IEDs discovered buried at Galadima-Kogo in the Shiroro Local Government Area on September 27, 2021.
Additional explosive materials were found at Mutun-Daya, also in Shiroro LGA, on February 11, 2022. These included explosives concealed in empty shells of suspected military missiles and a 5kg cooking gas cylinder.
More recently, on October 24, 2023, explosives hidden in a ten-litre jerrican, three suspected military hand grenades, and a bow-shaped improvised device were recovered in the Gbeganu area of Minna.
The successful destruction of these dangerous materials took place on August 22, 2024, at a secured location behind Zuma Rock in Suleja.
This operation was led by SP Mohammed Mamun, the Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit of the Command.
An investigation is currently underway to trace the origins of the explosive devices, with authorities working to identify and apprehend the individuals or groups responsible for concealing these weapons.
The successful operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the Nigerian Police and security agencies to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of citizens in Niger State and beyond.
