Police arrest over 100 in Niger artisan mining sites

The Niger State Police Command has stormed the illegal mining sites in Shiroro local government area arresting over 100 illegal artisans.

The arrests were said to have been made on Monday.

The artisans were said to have invaded some communities in Shiroro local government area following the ban on mining activities in Zamfara and Kastina States.

The influx of illegal artisans into the Shiroro community, which is already being bedevilled with insecurity, has caused apprehension in several quarters.

The Niger Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) DSP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that some arrests have been made by the Joint Security Operatives.

He said that investigation was still ongoing by the Police.

He stated that the police had received several complaints and concerns from the communities where the artisan miners were carrying out their activities.

Chairman of Shiroro local government area, Comrade Suleiman Chukuba, told reporters that the artisan miners who invaded the local government area were more than 1,000.
