The United Nations, Positive Livelihood Award Center (UN-POLAC) has urged the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) and Nigerians at all levels, especially those in elective and appointive positions, not to loiter at their appointments, rather, to make their appointments their passion.

UN-POLAC made the call at one of their events in Lagos, over the weekend with the Theme: “My appointment, my passion.”

The occasion was the appointment as International Peace Advocate (Mayor of Peace) and the official flag hoisting in honour of Rev. Dr. Zaccheaus A. Ogunsanya and Pastor (Mrs.) Deborah Sola Ogunsanya at The Bible Pattern Church Lagos, on Saturday, August 13, 2022.

While speaking at the event, Amb. Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, the UN-POLAC International Director/ Country President gave the advice: “Always make your appointment, your passion”.

The Christian community was heavily represented at the occasion by His grace, Rt. Rev. Dr. S.T.V. Adegbite, Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State Chapter, and Bishop Francis Wale Oke, National President, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), among other ministers.

The occasion was also graced by His Royal Highness, Oba Dr. Adedapo Tejuosho, Elegba of Egba.

Among other dignitaries present at the occasion were Prince Usman Akanbi Hamzat, ACP Ibrahim Zungura, Mr. E.O Eweka, and Mr. Olutosin Makinde.

Bishop Adesanya-Davies further recalls a memo submitted by UN-POLAC during the call for memorandum on constitution review, 2020 towards principle of equality and justice of tribal co-existence.

She explained that, “the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) which is an Association made up of thirty (30) Christians and thirty (30) Muslims, making a total number of sixty (60) should be encouraged by the government to duly perform and take their appointments as their passion.

“NIREC should be encouraged and projected to save Nigeria from the on-going very serious state of insecurity in the nation, just as the UN- POLAC International Peace Advocates has been working tenaciously on fostering peace.

“There is no doubt that insecurity has already eaten deep into the fabric of our society and it must be urgently curbed at all cost.

“NIREC should be given a better place in the Nigerian Constitution.

“They should be used as a platform to save Nigeria and the adoption of the sixty NIREC delegates as chosen should be in practice as designated.

“Moreover, we also call on the Senate, (the upper chamber) and House of Representatives, (the lower chamber), in Abuja as well as, House of Assembly members to make their appointments which they are being juicily paid for, their passion,” she added.

Professor Obong Eton, Director-General, UN-POLAC, Nigeria, advocated on the subject he titled: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

“Good is never defeated by evil, once the path is taken, good will always defeat evil at the long run.

“I will like to close with a prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:

The awardees, Pastor Dr. and Mrs. Z. A. Ogunsanya who received the Mayor of Peace and Ambassador of Peace awards promised through the activities of the Church and the UN-POLAC, they will continue to campaign for PEACE and Peace institutions as true Ambassadors of Peace.

Alhaji Abdulsalam Ekpuze, Director, Inter-Religious Affairs, UN-POLAC admonished the new peace advocates to seek the knowledge of the Holy Books and always remember the topic of today, “My Appointment, My Passion.”

He further stated: “The passion of Peace Advocates is to love and show compassion for others, calling people to POSITIVE LIVELIHOOD through God’s revealed WORDS contained in the Holy Bible and Quran for our guardian.”

The opening remarks was made by Dr. JCE Onucha, Regional Advisor S/W, POLAC and the vote of thanks was given by Lady Amb. C. Agu, National Director of Programmes, POLAC.
