Paul Campbell, 43, will spend 21 years behind bars for the brutal manslaughter of 62-year-old Dr. Gordon Ogunmuyiwa, a kind-hearted former doctor who was tragically targeted due to his vulnerability.
Additionally, Campbell will face five years on extended licence, ensuring strict supervision upon release. The sentencing has left the Thornton Heath community deeply unsettled, as residents mourn the loss of a beloved neighbor.
On Christmas Eve 2022, the horrific attack unfolded at Campbell’s home on Dunheved Road West. Ogunmuyiwa, known for his gentle nature, suffered fatal injuries after being violently assaulted. Shockingly, Campbell called paramedics but then fled, leaving the victim to die alone. By the time help arrived, it was too late.
To make matters worse, Campbell heartlessly exploited Ogunmuyiwa’s death by using his credit cards to buy an iPhone just days later. This cold-hearted act exposed his complete lack of remorse. During the three-week trial at Woolwich Crown Court, disturbing evidence revealed a pattern of abuse, with witnesses confirming Campbell had repeatedly beaten the victim.
A post-mortem examination showed Ogunmuyiwa had suffered multiple injuries before his death. Neighbors recalled hearing a vicious struggle on the night of the attack, which ultimately proved fatal. Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who led the case, expressed outrage, stating, “Gordon was a vulnerable man who deserved kindness, not cruelty. Campbell’s actions were cowardly and despicable.”
Campbell was arrested in January 2023 and convicted in May 2025 after a thorough investigation. The lengthy sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the profound grief inflicted on Ogunmuyiwa’s family. This case highlights the urgent need to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and violence.
While the sentencing brings some closure, the pain of losing such a compassionate soul remains. The court’s decision sends a strong message: such heartless acts will not go unpunished. Ogunmuyiwa’s memory will live on as a reminder of the importance of kindness and justice in our society.
