The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, Temitope Ajayi, has likened Mr Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election to former US President and Republican candidate for the 2024 US election, Donald Trump.

Mr Temitope made the comparison in a post on his official X on Wednesday following the electrifying US presidential debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

He said, “Peter Obi is the Nigeria version of Donald Trump. Like Obi, Trump will use the most negative epithets imaginable to describe a country he wants to lead again just to make a point and rile up his base”.

In the first, and perhaps only, presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump, the two candidates verbally sparred in often deeply personal terms, with policy arguments largely being overshadowed by fiery exchanges over character and crowd size.

“Kamala Harris prosecuted Trump very well in their first face to face debate yesterday night. Kamala convincingly won the debate and left no one in doubt about his capacity.

“Vice President Harris knew Trump’s weakness and set traps for him. Trump fell for her baits. Both candidates have been fact-checked on their claims in the debate. While Harris was reported to have made just one incorrect claim, Trump made 33 false claims in the same 90 minutes debate”, Ajayi added.

Meanwhile, political pundits, analysts and commentators noted that Mr. Trump had often found himself on the defensive on issues such as abortion while allowing himself to be baited by Harris and veering off message.

The vice president humiliated the attendance at Mr. Trump’s rallies and suggested that American military leaders view him as a “disgrace,” while Mr. Trump often responded angrily, declaring that she had no policies of her own.

The former president was constantly fact-checked by debate moderators but Trump only doubled down on his assertions such as claiming that immigrants are eating dogs and pets of US residents.

“They’re “eating the cats” of residents.

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs  the people that came in, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country,” Trump said, contradicting the Springfield city manager, who said such accusations had no basis in fact.

With only eight weeks until the election and early voting beginning in some states, this debate likely to be the only one was a crucial chance for both candidates to reach a broad audience.

Harris’s assertive performance left her supporters cheering, while some Republicans conceded that Trump struggled to maintain his focus.

Trump reiterated false claims about the 2020 election being stolen, labeled Harris a “Marxist,” and inaccurately blamed migrants for rising violent crime.

Marc Short, former chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, criticized Trump’s debate strategy, stating, “Trump missed an opportunity to focus on key issues like the economy and border security, instead allowing himself to be sidetracked by election denial and outlandish claims about immigrants.”

Adding to the momentum for Harris, pop star Taylor Swift took to Instagram to endorse her and her running mate Tim Walz, referencing a derogatory comment by Vance with her signature flair, to her 283 million followers.
