No safe haven for human rights violators in the army – Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai [above], has stated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) is established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and therefore guided by law in all its affairs. 

He further added that the Nigerian Army (NA) respects and protect Human Rights even in the fight against terrorism and insurgency adding that the NA takes Human Rights issue very seriously and trains its personnel both locally and abroad on the issue.

The COAS further stated that the NA has also partnered NHRC and ICRC who visited NA detention facilities on regular basis. 

He also said that the AFN have recognized the importance and respects the Rule of Law, saying that there is no safe haven for Human Right violators in today’s Nigerian Army.

He stated this in his remarks at the Nigerian Bar Association’s [NBA] Workshop on “Human Rights in Times of Conflict”, in Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, Borno State on Monday.

Similarly, Nigerian Bar Association with Nigerian Army inaugurates human rights monitoring team as part of measures to improve human rights protection and abuse by security personnel.

In addition, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Augustine Alegbe, at the workshop in Maiduguri, lauds the military’s counter-insurgency efforts in the Northeast.
