The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to engage in constructive dialogue regarding the Tax Reform Bill, especially its workforce implications. During the unveiling of CNG buses in Ibadan, NLC President Joe Ajaero highlighted the urgency of addressing critical concerns within the Bill. He emphasized that collaboration is vital to clarify issues, particularly the proposed zero taxation for workers earning below N800,000 annually. However, many public service employees earn above this threshold, potentially impacting nearly all workers in Nigeria. Ajaero stressed the need for clarity and dialogue to address these concerns effectively.
Additionally, tax expert Professor Godwin Oyedokun acknowledged taxes’ role in societal development but cautioned against taxing those unable to pay, labeling it “taxing poverty.” He advocated for focusing new tax initiatives on individuals with luxurious lifestyles to ensure fair contributions. Furthermore, he underscored the necessity of reforming tax policies to capture revenue from informal sectors and digital businesses. Oyedokun encouraged the NLC to pursue constructive negotiations with the government, suggesting that resistance may arise from self-interest. In related news, Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and the union during the CNG bus unveiling.
