Over 10 Nigerian teenage girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution by a syndicate have been rescued.

This was disclosed by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).

The victims within the ages of 15, 16 and 18 mostly from Imo State were reportedly lured from Nigeria to Ghana.

Though, the arrowhead of the trafficking ring has been arrested by Ghanaian authorities.

According to Dabiri-Erewa, the girls were rescued by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO).

In a viral video sighted by NewsBand showing the aftermath of the rescue, a NIDO representative said, “We just rescued all these ones from one single person, innocent Nigerian children that were brought here to do what they wouldn’t have wished do to. They are helpless. They picked them and send them to do prostitution and they would be collecting money from these innocent children.”

While expressing surprise over the situation, Dabiri-Erewa took to social media to urge the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to intervene.

“These are young girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution. We thank Chief Callistus, Chairman, NIDO Ghana, for ensuring the arrest of the evil perpetrator. I am sure NAPTIP⁩ will follow up, very heartbreaking.”

Dabiri-Erewa further disclosed that another group of girls have been rescued and assured that legal proceedings will be pursued against the perpetrator in Ghana.

Also, efforts are also underway to repatriate the rescued girls to Nigeria.

However, insisting on accountability for traffickers, Dabiri-Erewa stressed, “They are worse than drug barons! And as long as they are walking about freely, innocent young children will continue to be trafficked!”
