The Nigeria Customs Service recently intercepted $1.15 million and SR135,900 in undeclared foreign currency at Mallam Aminu Kano Airport.

During a routine baggage inspection, officers discovered the funds from passenger Hauwa Ibrahim Abdullahi, who arrived on Saudi Airline Flight SV401.

NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed officers identified the concealed currency during a physical luggage examination, underscoring tightened border surveillance.

The undeclared currency was hidden inside packs of palm-date fruits, locally known as Dabino.

Following the seizure, both the suspect and the confiscated funds were handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.

After a thorough probe, the court found the defendant guilty as charged and ordered the forfeiture of the undeclared money to the Federal Government.

This ruling was in accordance with the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022.

The Nigeria Customs Service recently reiterated its commitment to enforcing financial regulations. Additionally, it emphasized that all travelers must comply.

Specifically, Nigerian law requires individuals to declare cash or negotiable instruments exceeding approved thresholds during entry or exit.

These rules stem from the Money Laundering Act of 2022 and the Foreign Exchange Act of 1995, ensuring robust financial oversight.

Non-compliance with these regulations constitutes a violation of Nigerian law and carries severe penalties.

The NCS has urged members of the public to adhere strictly to these guidelines to avoid facing legal consequences.

This incident highlights the Service’s ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes and ensure transparency in cross-border currency movements.
