MTN rakes in N96.8b profit after tax in Q1 of 2022

Telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. has amassed a Profit After Tax (PAT) of N96.8 billion, according to its unaudited results released for the quarter ended Thursday, 31 March 2022 on the NGX on Friday, 29 April 2022.

According to key metrics of the report, mobile subscribers on the MTN platform declined by 1.3 million to 70.2 million Year-Over-Year (YoY), a method of evaluating two or more measured events to compare the results at one period with those of a comparable period on an annualized basis.

The decline was impacted by the regulatory restrictions on new SIM sales and activations.

However, it added 1.7 million subscribers in Quarter 1 of 2022 versus Quarter 4 of 2021.

Also, active data users increased by 3.4 million to 35.9 million YoY, while 1.6 million active users were added in added 1 of 2022 vs added 4 of 2021.

The report further showed that active fintech subscribers rose by 6.2 million to 10.7 million YoY as the company added 1.3 million subscribers in added 1 of 2022 versus Quarter 4 of 2021.

Service revenue of the company increased by 22.0% to N469.8 billion, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 25.7% to N257.1 billion.

EBITDA margin also increased by 1.5 percentage points (pp) to 54.6%.

The profit after tax grew by 31.3% to a record N96.8 billion as earnings per share (EPS) rose by 31.3% to N4.76 kobo respectively.

Capital expenditure (Capex) rose by 80.8% to N162.5 billion (up by 156.8% to N81.2 billion, excluding right of use assets).

Final dividend climaxed at N8.57 kobo per share for the full year of 2021.
