Ralf Rangnick has finally reached an agreement with Manchester United to become their interim manager.

The 63-year-old, who is seen as the ‘godfather’ of modern coaching in Germany, is leaving his job as head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow to take up the role.

According to The Athletic news, the agreement is subject to Rangnick’s current club, Lokomotiv, agreeing to release him from his contract, although Manchester United do not anticipate this to be a problem.

Rangnick has agreed a six-month deal until the end of May. He will have a further two years in a consultancy role.

United, despite sounding out Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino as their number one target to replace Solskjaer on a long-term basis, did confirm at the time of the Norwegian’s departure that they planned to bring an interim boss until the end of the season.

Pochettino is understood to be prepared to leave PSG for Old Trafford at this moment in time, but the French club have already rejected United’s first move for him, meaning the Reds have stuck with their original plan of bringing in an interim manager.

Although the deal is not quite over the line just yet, Rangnick is poised to fill Solskjaer’s shoes, meaning he will bring a wealth of experience and know-how to the club.
