Kwara CP Arrests SARS Officers Forcefully Accessing Citizens’ Phones, Laptops

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Lawan Ado has ordered the arrest of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police officers harassing and illegally accessing phones and Laptops of citizens around Tanke Area of Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital, a group, Kwara Must Change has learnt.

The arrest order was given, after Kwara Must Change raised alarm about the abuse of citizen’s privacy and illegal operation being carried out by the officers this morning.

Kwara Must Change had complained that, SARS Police Officers numbering about 6 with a sky blue 18 seater bus are currently at Pipeline Police Post, Opposite CBN quarters, abusing and harassing members of the public, through unwarranted stop and search.

These officers are illegally searching people’s phones and Laptops, forcing them to unlock their passwords in total violation of the rules and regulation of police code of conduct.

A member of Kwara Must Change who was a victim reported the incident around 10am on Thursday.

The SARS officers stopped every vehicle passing by either public or private, request for phones or laptop’s of the passengers or forces them to take it.

They access their phones and laptops thereby violating citizen’s right to privacy.

Upon bringing the matter to the attention police authority, the Kwara Police Commissioner, Lawal Ado ordered the arrest of the officers.

According to the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ajayi Okasanmi, the Commissioner of Police has directed the officer in charge of SARS to go and arrest the men.

Kwara Must Change is yet to independently verify the authenticity of the action, but we commend the proactive response of the Kwara State police command on the matter.
