Killing of Deborah: Jatau released from prison after 18 months

Mrs Rhoda Jatau, a Bauchi State health care worker has been released from prison custody after spending 18 months in prison for condemning the killing of Samuel Deborah in Sokoto State.

Jatau was released on bail on Friday following interventions by human rights activists, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council and the Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria.

Recall that Jatau was arrested on May 20, 2022, by authorities in Bauchi State after she sent a message via WhatsApp suspected to be blasphemous.

Jatau was charged under Sections 114 and 210 of the Penal Code Law, as well as Section 24 Subsection 1b(i) of the Cyber Crimes Act, accused of inciting public disturbance; exciting contempt of religious creed; and cyberstalking.
