Five suspects involved in the Offa bank robbery of 2018, has been sentenced to death by hanging.
Justice Haleemah Salman of Kwara State High Court handed down the judgement on Thursday.
The court found the accused guilty of illegal possession of firearms, armed robbery, and culpable homicide, all of which are punishable by death under Nigerian law.
The robbery, remains one of the most violent in recent Nigerian history, claiming the lives of several police officers and civilians.
During the attack, several banks were targeted, leading to widespread panic and significant loss of life.
While delivering the verdict, Justice Salman stated that the evidence presented in court established the suspects’ involvement beyond reasonable doubt.
She stressed that the crimes committed were of the most severe nature, warranting the capital punishment.
