Jorginho is contemplating a departure from Arsenal this January, prior to his contract’s expiration this summer. Moreover, reports indicate that the Italian midfielder has been proposed to Brazilian club Palmeiras.
According to reports in Brazil, discussions have already taken place between Jorginho’s agent and the Brazilian team. However, his exit hinges on reaching an agreement between both parties involved.
It appears that Palmeiras is one of two clubs Jorginho would consider returning to in Brazil, with Flamengo being the other option. Notably, the 33-year-old has logged only 820 minutes this season, starting merely nine of Arsenal’s 30 matches.
Despite signing a contract extension last year, it seems Jorginho’s situation may not mirror past decisions. He has fallen down the hierarchy of Mikel Arteta’s midfielders, particularly following the £31.6 million acquisition of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad in August 2024.
Initially, Jorginho made his mark in the Premier League with Chelsea after transferring from Napoli in 2018 for £57 million. He quickly established himself as a key player, winning the Europa League in his debut season against his future club.
Though not a traditional, aggressive midfielder, Jorginho excelled in controlling the game’s tempo and delivering exceptional passes. His performance in the 2021/22 season confirmed his status as one of Europe’s elite midfielders.
His signature hop-step penalty routine exemplified his composure, leading Chelsea to their second Champions League title by defeating Manchester City in the final. Subsequently, he captained Italy to a Euro victory, starting every match for his country.
This success led to him finishing third in the 2021 Ballon d’Or, trailing only Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.
When Arsenal made a significant deadline day signing in 2023, it was revealed that Mikel Arteta’s interest in Jorginho began earlier.
Arteta had initially attempted to sign Jorginho in 2020, showcasing his long-standing admiration for the midfielder’s abilities and potential.
Arteta’s interest in Jorginho extended beyond Chelsea; during his time at Manchester City, he also sought to bring him in.
Jorginho has significantly contributed to Arsenal’s near-miss for their first Premier League title since 2004 last season. However, as the team grapples with injury woes, selling Jorginho could pose a considerable risk.
