Jonathan confirms that he is not exiled in Cote d’Ivoire

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports in the media that he taken refuge in Cote d’Ivoire on a self-imposed exile.

Commenting on the report, former media aide to Jonathan Reno Omokri, via a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle @renoomokiri decried the reports.

He said: “I’m in touch with former President @GEJonathan and I have spoken to Nduka Obaigbena. The story on GEJ exile is false #GEJISNOTONEXILE”.

“The @GEJonathan has absolutely no reason to even contemplate exile. He is proud of his meritoriously service to Nigeria #GEJISNOTONEXILE.

“Furthermore, @GEJonathan is a man of peace whose future isn’t worth the blood of any Nigerian. He has no link to violence #GEJISNOTONEXILE.

“@GEJonathan assures Nigerians that he’s been on a multi city speaking tour & WILL RETURN to Nigeria afterward as planned. #GEJISNOTONEXILE.”

Also, to further condemn he report, the former president called THISDAY from Cote d‘Ivoire.

He confirmed that he was indeed in the West African country, but was not in exile.

Speaking to THISDAY on phone, on Monday, he said: “So what… I am not in exile. I am here resting.”

He said: “Yes I am in Cote d’Ivoire, I have been here for a week resting and this is my second trip to the country since I stepped down as president.”

He maintained however that he was not in exile because he had no reason to leave Nigeria as he had done his best for his country as president.

“I have made sacrifices for Nigeria.

“I am praised all over Africa for averting bloodshed and for the peaceful transition from one government to another, but it seems Nigeria does not appreciate my efforts.

“I have done my best for this country and if I have to die for it, I will do so.

“However, I am taking it easy here (Cote d’Ivoire) and when I am ready, I will come back,” he said.

The Nigerian mediasphere is awash with report that Jonathan had gone into exile following the resolve by the federal government to arrest him on allegations of corruption.

The perception that the government was going to reel him has also been linked to the heightened attacks on oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta.
