IGP Adamu threatens to slam N10b libel suit on Sowore

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has threatened to file a N10 billion suit against the online platform, SaharaReporters, and its publisher, Mr Omoyele Sowore.
This was contained in a pre-action letter dated August 6, 2020, written by his lawyer, Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN).
The letter was titled, ‘Re: Defamatory publication against Mr Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, NPM, mni (current Inspector-General of Police): Demand for retraction and unequivocal apology’.
IGP Adamu was reacting to a media report accusing him of illegally raising funds to build a police training school in Nasarawa State.
The Police boss denied the August 3 report by SaharaReporters through the letter by Dr Izinyon, describing it as false.
He also threatened to file a criminal complaint against the media outfit and its publisher with relevant government agencies.
The IGP gave SaharaReporters and Sowore seven days to tender “a written and unequivocal retraction with an apology carried with the same prominence on their platform and three national dailies.”
The letter stated in part:
“Our client hastened to inform you that these defamatory words in your said publications are farrago of lies, concoctions all calculated by you to bring our client to the lowest contempt.
“They are a product of you and your online publication to achieve your premeditated blackmail, dubious and diabolical ends.

Just last month, ElombahNews reported on July 24 that Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, a legal icon in Nigeria, had also given SaharaReporters a seven-day ultimatum to withdraw and publicly apologise over its publication.
The publication asserted that he, Ozekhome, wants the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, dead.
The said publication was titled “Why Ozekhome wants Magu dead! By Isreal Olayiwola”.
Lawyer to Ozekhome, Benson A. Igbanoi, Esq., a Senior Associate Partner, gave the ultimatum in a letter.
He alleged a “highly defamatory write-up” of concern to the legal icon published and circulated globally.
Igbanoi said the publication is “extremely defamatory and damaging” against the person, character and status of his client.
He also threatened N5 billion lawsuit and the media house.
