I am from Mkpat Enin LGA. I have longed complained that Udom Emmanuel’s coconut factory was only on the pages of Newspapers and television station and I was right.

In response to my true talk, a Catholic Bishop has HURRIEDLY decided to take shame out of Udom’s face; And has placed a signboard in Ikot Abasi village just by the Ikot Abasi-Eket Express road. It is called ST, GABRIEL COCONUT FACTORY

The main issue is not whether there is a factory or not but this is the issue we have to face:

In the days of Akpabio, I requested a friend to take me to the site of the now moribund Tropicana. At that time construction was just starting. I look at the first building and told my friend that this building will collapse, and indeed, it did collapsed. It was not by juju or by my prayers, but because the building was technically defective from the foundation. The columns were so tiny and overall reinforcements were weakling.

Today we have the so called coconut factory and I have already spotted weaknesses from its first day:-

1. This factory is on the express road. It is on the main road. You don’t place a factory on a main road. You must give at least 50 to 100 meters from the road, but this one has less than 3 metres allowance from the road.

2. The foundation is being destroyed before it is laid. You don’t lay a foundation on top of leaves and expect it to stay. You can see from the photo below that the vegetation has just been removed and the contractor is preparing to pour red sands on it without first scooping out the top soil. The top soil (humus soil) will serve as a foam that will give it an unstable floating foundation. Maybe this is a new kind of construction technology developed by Zenith bank for Udom Emmanuel to implement.

3. A profitable cash crop like the palm tries are being cut down to give way to coconut oil factor:-

i. Have we done the economic impact assessment – if YES, where it it

ii. Have we done the Social and Safety Impact assessments of setting this factory in this place and at the express road – If yes, where is it.

iii. Have we done Environmental Impact Assessment of this project?, if yes, where can I find it.

4. This project is wrongly sited, and is not showing any better prospect of completion in Udom’s Tenure. I hope a replica of Tropicana and empty Library is not heading for yet another avoidable wastes.
