The Labour Party of Nigeria has revealed how the embattled national chairman of the party, Barrister Julius Abure and his family survived an assassination attempt in their Abuja home on Wednesday.
Mr Obiora Ifoh, the spokesman of LP disclosed this in a terse statement.
He said Abure’s home was gutted by a “mysterious fire” which started a few minutes after 1am when the entire family was asleep.
According to the image maker of the opposition party, it took divine intervention for Abure and his family to escape after neighbours and security men pulled down one of the windows upstairs making ways for the family to escape.
They were immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Part of statement reads, “The entire family was trapped as the inferno had reached the staircase making it impossible for Abure and family to escape.
“However, it took divine intervention for the national chairman and his family to escape after neighbours and security men gallantly pulled down one of the windows upstairs making ways for the family to escape.
“Men of the Fire Service arrived shortly after Abure and his family were evacuated.
“Abure and his family were rushed to a private hospital where they are presently receiving treatment. Their condition is however stable.”
NewsBand reported that during the controversial convention of the party last month, Julius Abure was re-elected as the national chairman of the party despite fierce opposition from the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
Recall that Abure has been having a running battle with the NLC leadership headed by comrade Joe Ajaero.
NLC had called for Abure’s resignation as party chairman and the immediate constitution of a caretaker transition committee to organise a legitimate and all-inclusive national convention for the party.
