On January 29, 2025, the House of Representatives issued a firm response to a recent PREMIUM TIMES report.
This report alleged that certain lawmakers in the National Assembly solicited bribes from Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities to facilitate the approval of their 2025 budget allocations.
In a statement, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. expressed the legislative body’s serious concerns about current allegations under investigation.
Moreover, preliminary findings indicate a troubling pattern of malfeasance occurring in certain institutions, warranting urgent attention and action.
The House emphasized the necessity of a thorough inquiry into these claims, highlighting the importance of accountability within public institutions.
“The House acknowledges the commitment of the majority of university administrators, who are diligent and patriotic Nigerians working to advance education and national development,” Rep. Rotimi stated.
However, he condemned the actions of a minority seeking to evade scrutiny and accountability, urging that such behavior cannot be overlooked.
The spokesman criticized PREMIUM TIMES for not adhering to the principles of balanced journalism.
He asserted that the report lacked diligent investigative efforts.
Consequently, it perpetuated fabricated narratives rather than presenting an accurate account of the situation.
He pointed out that the media outlet did not seek a response from the House prior to publishing the allegations, undermining the report’s credibility and professionalism.
A request for comment was only made two days after the story had already circulated publicly.
In a call for transparency, the House urged anyone with credible evidence of misconduct to present their findings promptly.
This includes reporting to the appropriate authorities, such as the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, along with anti-corruption agencies like the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
“This is a challenge we have consistently put forth to PREMIUM TIMES,” Rotimi remarked, lamenting the outlet’s choice to indulge in sensationalism rather than contributing constructively to the discourse on governance.
The House reaffirmed its commitment to holding public institutions accountable while respecting due process.
Consequently, institutions that follow established procedures have received their budget approvals without issues.
Conversely, institutions with outstanding obligations will need to fulfill their responsibilities before receiving any further approvals.
This approach ensures accountability and encourages compliance with financial obligations.
In closing, Rep. Rotimi called on all stakeholders, particularly within the media, to approach their responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.
“Together, we can strengthen our democracy and promote a more accountable and transparent governance system,” he stated.
This remark reinforces the House’s dedication to ensuring good governance and prioritizing the welfare of all Nigerians.
As the investigation progresses, the House of Representatives remains determined to fulfill its constitutional duty.
Consequently, it aims to uphold accountability and foster trust within Nigeria’s governance framework.
