Fulani nomads

At least six individuals were killed in a late-night assault by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Adógó settlement in Mbakundu Kindred, Tombo, Buruku Local Government Area (LGA), Benue State.

The attack occurred around 11:00 PM on Sunday, May 11, 2025, when assailants armed with automatic weapons and machetes stormed the village under the cover of darkness.

Haakyav Tombu Peter, a prominent son of the affected community, shared a distressing video on his official Facebook page, recounting the harrowing events.

He described how the attackers moved from house to house, shooting and hacking down innocent residents.

The assault lasted for several hours without any intervention from security forces, leaving the villagers helpless.

Sources from the area reported that the bodies of six victims, including children, have been recovered.

The deceased have been identified as Ansambe Akpen, Shina Ayom Akpen, Bade Jam Ata, Shiekuma Kpebee, and Sughter Avindigh Taku.

The identity of the sixth victim remains unknown. The remains have been deposited at the Community Health Clinic in Adógó.

Efforts to confirm the incident with the Benue State Police Command’s spokesperson were unsuccessful, as calls to her mobile phone went unanswered.

This tragic event adds to a series of recent attacks by suspected herdsmen in Benue State.

In early March, six people were killed in a similar assault on Tse Ugema Chul, Mbakesa community, in Ukum LGA.

The attackers reportedly ambushed youths who were attempting to chase away cattle that had strayed into their farmlands.

The assailants opened fire, killing several youths and looting the community’s farm produce.

The recurring violence has raised concerns among residents and local authorities about the growing insecurity in the region.

The Benue State government has condemned the attacks and called for increased security measures to protect vulnerable communities.

However, the persistent nature of these assaults underscores the challenges faced in curbing such violence and ensuring the safety of residents.

As investigations continue, the affected communities remain in mourning, grappling with the loss of lives and the trauma inflicted by these brutal attacks.

The need for effective security interventions and long-term solutions to address the root causes of such violence has never been more urgent. P
