Rivers State, Nigeria – Unidentified gunmen, suspected of belonging to a cult group, ambushed military personnel protecting a crude oil pipeline in Okporowo community on Monday morning.
The attack occurred in the Igbu Orlukwor clan of Ahoada East Local Government Area, sparking immediate chaos.
During the 11 a.m. assault, one soldier sustained critical injuries.
Witnesses confirmed troops retaliated swiftly, overpowering the attackers with superior firepower and forcing their retreat.
Consequently, terrified residents fled their homes, fearing military reprisals as soldiers scoured the area.
In response, Prince Ike Ehie, traditional ruler of Igbu Orlukwor, vehemently condemned the violence.
Through a palace statement signed by spokesperson Oyagiri Chime-Emele, he denounced the attack as “an affront to constituted authorities” and demanded accountability.

Moreover, Prince Ehie urged security forces to act professionally to prevent escalating tensions. He simultaneously directed community leaders to prioritize safety, warning that negligence could lead to their removal.
Expressing solidarity, the monarch prayed for the injured soldier’s recovery and pledged support to security agencies.
“May God lay His healing hands on the victim,” he stated, emphasizing communal unity.
