The Special Assistant (SA) to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Power, Engr. Meyen Etukudo has empowered 50 business owners in Atta Ukpum community in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State with sums ranging from N50,000 to N100,000 each.

Speaking on the scheme tagged Meyen Atta Ukpum Youth Empowerment Programme (MAUYEP), the SA said the scheme is driven by Governor Udom Emmanuel’s directive that all his aides should be closer to their home communities beyond political motives.

He said MAUYEP is not a politically motivated initiative but an empowerment programme in conjunction with a community Microfinance Bank, Madelyn Microfinance Bank Limited as the fund managers.

On the criteria used to select the 50 beneficiaries, the Governors’ aide said MAUYEP is not targeted at start-ups but at already existing businesses in Atta Ukpum community. “The aim of MAUYEP is not for people to start businesses but to boost the capacity of already existing businesses in the community” he said.

Engr. Etukudo said 50 people were selected from 5 villages within Atta Ukpum community – Ikot Ekop, Ikot Akpabio, Ikot Obiokoi, Ikot Abia and Assong.

He added that the initial number of 50 beneficiaries will undergo a two weeks mandatory Microcredit training to be facilitated by Madelyn Microfinance Bank who are the fund managers. “Upon completion of the training, the funds will be disbursed to each beneficiary” he stated.

Some of the beneficiaries lauded the Governor’s aide for the initiative and expressed appreciation for the support to boost the capacity of their already existing businesses
