Gombe Police Command refutes cleric’s claims, provides update on armed robbery investigation

The Gombe State Police Command has refuted claims made by Sheikh Albany Gombe in a viral video, labeling them misleading and inflammatory.

DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the command’s spokesperson, clarified the situation to prevent public unrest and correct misinformation.

Authorities arrested two suspects—Daniel Hamma, 36, and Garba Usman, 32—linked to criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, attempted homicide, and possession of stolen property.

During a search of Usman’s residence, police recovered two red motorcycles, a cutlass, spare parts, and police accouterments.

Both suspects confessed to a March 1, 2025, armed robbery and homicide, where the victim’s motorcycle plate matched recovered evidence.

Investigators later apprehended Bala Danyaya, 29, in Taraba State, who admitted receiving six stolen motorcycles between 2024 and 2025.

Efforts continue to locate the remaining stolen vehicles.

Meanwhile, the police dismissed Sheikh Gombe’s claim that all suspects were non-Muslims, confirming Usman and Danyaya as Muslims to counter religious tensions.

Abdullahi urged influencers to avoid divisive statements that risk destabilizing community harmony.

All suspects remain in custody, facing non-bailable charges, with plans to prosecute them after concluding investigations.

The command reaffirmed its dedication to transparency, justice, and maintaining peace across Gombe State.

They emphasized collaboration with the public to combat crime while cautioning against spreading unverified claims.

Sheikh Gombe’s video had alleged religious bias in the case, drawing sharp criticism from authorities. Abdullahi stressed that such narratives endanger social cohesion and hinder investigative progress.

Community leaders have since echoed calls for unity, urging residents to trust due process.

The victim’s family has demanded swift justice, supported by local advocacy groups pushing for stricter enforcement of anti-robbery laws.

Recent incidents have heightened concerns about motorcycle thefts and violent crimes in the region.

Police assured residents of increased patrols and intelligence operations to curb criminal activities.

This case highlights the critical role of factual reporting and responsible rhetoric in supporting law enforcement and preserving societal unity.

Authorities reiterated their resolve to address crime impartially, urging citizens to report suspicions through official channels.

The Gombe Command’s proactive stance aims to restore public confidence while deterring future offenses.
