Abuja, Nigeria – February 4, 2024 – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has promptly responded to a reported threat from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
This response comes after NANS allegedly warned it would shut down FRSC commands that impound vehicles belonging to its members during operations targeting fake number plates.
Consequently, the FRSC initiated these operations to combat the rising misuse of Nigerian number plates.
This misuse poses a significant threat to national security and undermines the National Uniform Licensing Scheme (NULS), which is designed to enhance vehicle identification and data management.
Furthermore, the FRSC emphasized the dangers of forged and duplicated number plates, which often involve individuals and organizations. These illegal practices pose significant risks to national security, as many crimes are linked to vehicles.
It cautioned that if these issues remain unchecked, they could worsen national security problems across the country. Consequently, the FRSC recognizes the urgent need to address this growing concern effectively.
“We find it perplexing that students, who should champion law and order, would threaten the FRSC,” stated Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal. His remarks highlight the unexpected nature of such threats from those expected to uphold the law.
He further emphasized the Corps’ mission to restore sanity to vehicle registration, which is essential for combating vehicle-related crimes. This mission underlines the importance of proper registration in maintaining public safety.
In light of this situation, the FRSC urged NANS to withdraw its threats. The organization affirmed its officers’ determination to perform their duties without fear or intimidation.
Moreover, it reiterated its unwavering commitment to maintaining safe highways and ensuring adherence to the National Vehicle Identification Scheme. This commitment is crucial for enhancing road safety and security nationwide.
To address the issue constructively, the FRSC expressed its readiness to engage NANS in dialogue. This engagement aims to clarify the objectives of the operations while fostering mutual understanding regarding the FRSC’s goals.
As the situation develops, the FRSC calls for cooperation among stakeholders to enforce vehicle registration regulations effectively. Such collaborative measures are vital for strengthening Nigeria’s security framework and ensuring safer roads for all citizens.
