Abuja, March 24, 2025 – In a bold move to tackle worsening congestion, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) today unveiled real-time traffic reporting through National Traffic Radio.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing its goal: empowering drivers with instant updates to curb delays and enhance safety across the capital.
Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, FRSC’s Public Education Chief, led a key meeting with Abuja traffic officers to finalize implementation strategies. Attendees practiced delivering live alerts from accident sites or chokeholds, ensuring motorists receive timely rerouting advice. “This system transforms how we manage crises,” Ogungbemide explained, “reducing frustration and saving lives through faster response times.”
Importantly, he noted the radio’s role in bridging communication gaps. “Accurate information lets drivers avoid hazards, easing pressure on our teams,” he said. The FRSC also plans to integrate emergency hotlines, allowing listeners to report incidents directly during broadcasts.
Building on past efforts, Corps Marshal Mohammed reaffirmed the link between awareness and compliance. “Informed drivers make safer choices,” he stressed, citing reduced speeding violations during recent awareness campaigns. The radio initiative aims to amplify this progress by keeping road rules fresh in commuters’ minds.
Meanwhile, authorities urge residents to adopt the service, airing on 107.1 FM, during peak hours. Early tests near Nyanya-Mararaba routes saw travel times drop by 40%, hinting at broader benefits. Drivers like Kemi Adeyemi, a daily commuter, praised the pilot: “Last week’s alert helped me dodge a truck breakdown—it works!”
Critics, however, question radio accessibility in tech-reliant areas. The FRSC assures partnerships with ride-hailing apps to stream updates digitally, ensuring inclusivity. “No one gets left behind,” Ogungbemide pledged.
As Abuja’s population surges, innovative solutions like this offer hope. By merging technology with grassroots engagement, the FRSC aims to untangle gridlock while fostering a culture of shared responsibility. Tune in, stay alert, and drive smart—the city’s mobility future depends on it.
