FG responds to allegations on expatriate quota administration, highlights newly established framework

Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior

The Ministry of Interior addressed recent allegations about expatriate quotas in Nigeria’s oil sector after they aired nationally.

Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary, clarified the government’s stance through an official statement on X.

She stressed that authorities are actively investigating the claims.

Furthermore, the Ministry had already initiated measures to resolve public concerns, as outlined in a February 12, 2025 circular.

This review notably restructured approval processes for EQ and Citizenship applications.

Consequently, the Minister and Permanent Secretary will now directly approve all expatriate quotas.

Previously, Directors handled these decisions, but this swift transition seeks to streamline operations and reduce delays.

Moreover, the reforms reinforce the Ministry’s focus on transparency and accountability.

By centralizing authority, they aim to ensure stricter oversight and public trust in administrative procedures.

It also seeks to directly address concerns related to potential abuse and irregularities within the expatriate quota system.

On March 4, 2025, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, convened a crucial meeting in Lagos with Ministry leaders, the Comptroller General of Immigration, and NECA representatives. Discussions prioritized fostering a business-friendly climate while safeguarding Nigerian interests.

Following the meeting, the Ministry formed a review committee comprising Interior Ministry officials, Immigration Service members, and NECA’s private sector partners. This committee will assess the current expatriate quota policy, propose necessary reforms, and ensure fairer implementation.

Minister Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the commitment to transparent, equitable expatriate quota administration. He stressed placing Nigerians’ welfare at the core of all decisions.

Finally, Dr. Ajani reassured the public that the Ministry remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders to address existing concerns. By continuously working to improve policies and procedures, the Ministry aims to contribute to the overall growth and development of Nigeria.
