In a bold move to address infrastructure needs, President Bola Tinubu recently approved N80 billion for reconstructing the Alau Dam.

Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, announced this during the second Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.

This initiative highlights a key collaboration between the federal government and Borno State, aiming to launch the project promptly.

Utsev emphasized the project’s urgency, noting the first phase will run from February to July 2025.

This timeline is critical to mitigating flood risks in the region during that period.

Utsev explained, “I reported on the committee formed on September 23, 2024, to evaluate dams nationwide.”

He added that the committee began work on October 2, 2024, and the approval now awaits FEC ratification.

His remarks underscored the partnership with Borno State to ensure timely progress.

Notably, the Alau Dam was identified as the most critical among 35 sites assessed by the committee.

This evaluation is part of a broader effort to address safety and functionality concerns surrounding dams across Nigeria.

The committee, led by the Minister of Environment and Sanitation, includes key figures like Finance Minister Wale Edun, Works Minister David Umahi, and Housing Minister Ahmed Dangiwa.

Other members are Information Minister Mohammed Idris, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Budget Minister Abubakar Bagudu.

Securing funds for the Alau Dam is a vital step to bolster Borno State’s resilience against persistent flooding.

As the project advances, it will not only enhance infrastructure but also boost the local economy and protect residents.

Overall, the federal government’s commitment reflects a broader strategy to improve living conditions and promote sustainable development across Nigeria.

This initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing regional challenges and fostering long-term growth.
