A collapsing economy in Sri Lanka may force thousands to flee the country towards Indian shores, as people escape dire food and energy shortages in the country.
On March 22, up to 16 Sri Lankans, half of them children, reached the southern Indian province of Tamil Nadu on fishing boats and were rescued by the coast guard.
But they might be just the first portent of a coming wave – Indian intelligence officers warn that “around 2,000 refugees” are set to arrive in the country within the next few weeks.
