EFCC begins in-house cleaning, detains 10 corrupt officers
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), appears to have commenced an in-house cleaning following the detention of 10 of its operatives over allegations of theft involving operational items.
The commission through its spokesman, Mr. Dele Oyewale, in a statement confirmed the arrest.
He said the action was taken following directives from the commission’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
The statement did not specify the items involved, but investigations revealed that the officers allegedly broke into the commission’s exhibit room, where they reportedly stole foreign currency and gold items.
A source who doesn’t want to be quoted speaking on the arrest said, “The operatives broke into the exhibit room and stole foreign currency, gold, and other exhibits.”
Meanwhile, the development comes just days after the anti-graft agency said 27 of it’s officers involved in fraudulent activities were fired.
Mr. Oyewale, said the detention of 10 officers for alleged items theft was “part of ongoing efforts to rid the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of corrupt practices.”
“Ten officers of the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC are currently being detained in connection with the investigation of some missing operational items involving them.
“These officers, who were arrested last week on the directives of the Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, are being questioned over the theft of items they could not account for.
“Investigators are making significant progress, and those found guilty will be subjected to internal disciplinary processes,” Oyewale said.
