A physiotherapist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), identified as Alex Ogunniyi, was shot dead by suspected cultists who stormed the hospital premises on Friday, April 25, 2025.
According to a report by Daily Trust, the assailants attacked the facility and shot Ogunniyi at close range, causing panic as patients and staff scampered for safety.
In response to the tragic incident, health workers at UBTH staged a protest on Monday, demanding justice for their fallen colleague and calling on security agencies to ensure better protection for medical personnel within and outside the hospital environment.
UBTH spokesman, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the killing and stated that the hospital had reported the matter to the relevant security authorities.
