Edo Guber: Oshiomhole mocks Obaseki for being childless
Former Governor of Edo State, Mr Adams Oshiomhole has sparked controversy with his recent remarks about Governor Godwin Obaseki and his wife, Betsy Obaseki.
Mr Ishiomole who is the current senator representing Edo North in the National Assembly, said that the Obasekis do not have a love for children, citing their childlessness as evidence.
Oshiomhole’s comments were in response to an alleged statement made by Betsy Obaseki, claiming that the APC governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, was the only contender without a wife.
However, during his appearance on TVC news, Oshiomhole countered the claim, noting that the Obasekis have been childless since their marriage and have not adopted any children, indicating a lack of love for children.
He said, “I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying that our candidate has no wife. She is the most, I’m sorry that she has to say that, because here is a woman who has no child. Between him and Obaseki, they have no child, they are childless,” Oshiomhole said.
“They are even not ready to adopt. I mean, I don’t blame, anybody should not have a child. But people who have love for children, they go to motherless home and adopt children. They have not adopted, they are both in their 60s. So you married, I don’t know whether it’s a contract or whatever it is, but they have no child,” Oshiomhole added.
He further noted that the Obasekis’ childlessness is a personal choice, but one that raises questions about their commitment to family values.
He contrasted this with the APC governorship candidate, Okpebholo, who has children who are well-educated and have been actively involved in his campaign.
“Now our candidate not only have children, he has invested in the education of those children, such that you watch them on live television, covered by your media stations, where the first one that spoke is a lawyer, the second one is a medical doctor, and they had dressed the crowd in a Edo South, in a Edo Central, in Edo North, and their mother was there,” Oshiomhole said.
Edo Women Call For Oshiomhole’s Mental Evaluation
Meanwhile, the association of women, known as Edo Women for Dignity and Respect (EWDR), has called for mental evaluation for the former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, for mocking Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, wife of the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for being childless.
The EWDR described Oshiomhole’s comments as “insensitive, degrading, and unbecoming of a public figure.”
It would be recalled that Oshiomhole, in a recent media interview, made disparaging remarks about Mrs. Obaseki’s childlessness, while tackling her for criticizing the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The EWDR, said Oshiomhole’s comments was an “unforgivable attack on the dignity of womanhood”, and that they represented a new low in Edo politics.
“Senator Oshiomhole’s comments are not only disrespectful but also highlight a deeply ingrained misogyny that has no place in our society. His attack on Mrs Obaseki is an attack on all women, and we cannot stand by and let such behaviour go unchecked,” the statement read.
The association said Oshiomhole’s comments suggest a possible decline in his mental faculties, which, if true, would render him unfit to continue in his role as a senator and public servant.
“We believe that no sane and mentally stable individual would make such outrageous comments about a woman, especially one who has served the state with dignity and grace.
“We are calling for an immediate mental evaluation of Senator Oshiomhole to ascertain his ability to function responsibly and respectfully in public office,” Mrs. Agatha Iredia, President of the EWDR, said.
The association urged the APC leadership to take swift action against Oshiomhole, adding that failure to do so would imply tacit approval of his comments.
