Detained 14 aides of Okorocha granted N70m bail, as defendant slumps

The detained aides of former governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, were on Monday granted bail to the sum of N70 million following their arrest on Sunday.

ElombahNews reported on February 21 that Senator Okorocha was arrested for personally leading thugs to destroy and vandalize security vehicles.

Okorocha reportedly broke into a property that was earlier seized from him by the Imo State government.

When they were arraigned on Monday, the defendants, including his aide-de-camp, Eberendu Chimechefulem, his legislative aide, Steve Asinuobi and 12 other aides were granted a N5m bond bail on each.

They were arraigned on a six-count charge as follows:

  1. conspiracy,
  2. breach of public peace,
  3. possession of firearms,
  4. unlawful destruction of the official seal of the Imo State Government,
  5. defamatory action on the social media against the governor of the state with the intent to injure the reputation of the state government and the person of the state governor, and,
  6. disturbance to a lawful order.

The magistrate, B.U Adikaibe, who ruled on the bail application made for the release of the defendants also included a traditional ruler in the state as surety and one of the bail conditions.

 

The defendants include Eberendu Chimechefulem, Ebere Nwoke, Basil MBA, Ebuka Samuel, Darlington Ibekewe, Obasi Goodluck, Nwaiwu Ndubuisi, Ekpendu Peace, Steve Anisnuobi, and Ebere Nwokeobi.

Meanwhile, the was a mild drama in the court when one of the defendants, Darlington Ibekwe, slumped while the magistrate was ruling on their bail application.

Acconrding to information made available to ElombhNews, the Imo State had recovered and sealed Royal Spring Palm Hotels and Apartments, allegedly owned by Nneoma Rochas Okorocha, wife of the former governor.

A team of government officials and police, led by the Commissioner for Lands, Barr. Enyinnaya Onuegbu, had on Friday, February 19, stormed the Royal Spring Palm Hotels and Apartments and sealed off the property.

In another development, the Hope Uzodinma-led administration, last week, also recovered the Eastern Palm University from Rochas Okorocha and renamed it.
