In December, 1995, some group of people in the city of Kano, accused a woman of desecrating the Qoran. According to them, the woman allegedly used pages of the Qoran for her child’s poo.

Her husband, Gideon Akaluka, a young Igbo trader, who was not even at home was targeted but the Police arrested and locked him up so he can be protected. Some men in the name of Muslim Brotherhood with their mobilised mobs, attacked the station, killed Akaluka, cut off his head and danced around the city of Kano with it.

Nine men were identified as the leaders. Extremely angry with the barbaric act, then Head of State, Late Gen. Sani Abacha who himself was a Muslim, gave orders for all 9 men to be killed. Eight of the nine were killed except one who was hidden by some northern elites led by former First Bank Chairman, Alhaji Umah Muttallab.

Muttallab prevailed on Abacha to spare the life of the 9th person who is a Kano Prince. Abacha yielded to pressure after a while, and that man who committed such a heinous crime will later rise to become our CBN governor and Late Gen. Sani Abacha later the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

Now, look at it this way, Alhaji Muttallab who prevailed on Abacha to pervert Justice and helped him into working in the Banking sector, his son Umar Farouk Abdulmuttallab would later drag his name into the mud as a father of a terrorist.

He made headlines as a world renowned terrorist when on December 25,2009, he boarded and attempted to blow up (underwear bomber) a Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan. Abdulmuttallab would later receive 5 life sentences + 50 years jail term in the US.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on the other hand was made CBN governor by Late President Yar’adua but was disgraced out of office when President Jonathan sacked him. He was to become Emir of Kano but few years later Kano state governor Umar Ganduje deposed and sent him on exile.

Meanwhile, Akaluka’s lawyer said his wife wasn’t actually the one who committed the crime he was killed for but their neighbour. This was something proper investigations would have unravelled instead of the jungle justice meted on the young man.

Afterall that’s why we have law’s, courts and even Muslims have the Sharia courts. Powerful men like Muttallab would make sure the case was swept under the carpet. I am writing this because of other incidents that have happened including the recent one in Sokoto where Deborah was murdered and her body burnt.

I have said it over and over that Deborah’s actions were totally unacceptable. But did any book in the Islamic faith recommend jungle justice the way she was killed? The answer is a big no.

So, these are my take out from these whole scenario.

1- We must respect each others religion. After all there are no 2 God’s in the world.

2- Jungle justice is barbaric and animalistic and has no place in a civilised society, as a lot of innocent people have been killed for crimes they didn’t commit.

3- Nigeria needs a leader that will be fair to all, and with a level of dictatorship. Under Abacha, Sokoto wouldn’t have happened, and even if it does, people would be paying the ultimate price for it by now.

4- Most importantly, NOBODY, and I repeat, NOBODY can fight for God. If those who beheaded Gideon Akaluka were actually fighting for God, the things that happened to Muttallab and Sanusi wouldn’t have happened.

Akaluka is dead and gone, his family won’t see him again. But not long ago, l read 82 years old Alhaji Muttallab lamenting and praying that he hope he would see his son one more time before he depart this earth. Well, I don’t believe God answers such prayers.

God said both in the Bible and the Qoran that…

“Only me give life, and only me take life.”
