The death toll in the violent clash between security forces and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, has risen to 11.
Also, over 295 members of the movement have been taken into custody while 32 others is said to have sustained serious injuries.
The clash erupted around 2:20pm on Friday when IMN members, reportedly wielding firearms, cutlasses, catapults, sticks, stones, and homemade petrol bombs, allegedly launched an attack on military operatives stationed at Banex along Aminu Kano Crescent.
Security operatives responded as the demonstrators allegedly opened fire and hurled projectiles at them, triggering a violent confrontation.
News Band gathered that three military personnel sustained severe injuries and were transported to the National Hospital, where one succumbed to his wounds.
The other two remain under medical care.
“In response, security operatives used minimal force to disperse the protesters,” a senior officer stated. “We were able to arrest 19 suspects at the scene, while others fled in different directions.”
Following the altercation, a coordinated security operation across the capital led to the apprehension of 295 individuals.
Authorities have since reinforced security around detention facilities, while the injured and deceased were taken to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for medical attention.
