It is unfortunate, but not completely surprising to read that Governors of Northern Nigeria under the auspices of the Northern Governors’ Forum have rejected the patriotic, fair and national interest position of the Southern Governors’ Forum demanding that the presidency be zoned to the Southern part of the country in 2023. Like the Mauritanian man they had sent ahead to test the waters for them, these governors continue to insult the sensibilities of Nigerians by quoting the so-called “Unconstitutionality” of zoning in order to advance their malevolent avarice for power and impertinent ambition to dominate other sections of the country, in the false assumption of numerical superiority.

These governors know, but would mischievously refuse to concede that the decision to concede the presidency of, not just Nigeria, but any nation for that matter to specific ethnic groups, gender or interest group or even political Parties, has never been solely about Constitutional considerations, but about national interest.

History is replete with instances of extraconstitutional steps taken or adopted in other to stabilize the polity. In Nigeria’s recent political history, the South have had to, on different occasions, relinquish their right to the presidency, for national interest. The North has never willingly done that. Maybe, because the North, or let’s say, the elites of the North do not really believe in Nigeria’s interest, but only in “North’s interest?

Not even in the period leading up to the civil war of 1967 has Nigeria’s unity been as threatened and as uncertain as it currently is, and the reason is not far from these insensitive utterances and actions such as the one under reference.

Anyone whom Providence has placed in position of influence of authority in Nigeria must take responsibility of ensuring that this nation is saved from the precincts of total collapse. This is no time to experiment with irredentism or of such primitive ideas, but a time to save the union, though imperfect, but a collective heritage.

Nothing can heal Nigeria now, more than justice, and a key aspect of any genuine attempt to ensure justice or to give the people some sense of justice is by the North relinquishing their right to aspire to the Nigerian presidency in 2023 and for every other region in Nigeria to stand together with the Southeast to produce for Nigeria, her best President in decades, come 2023.

TRUTH MUST PREVAIL!
