A 35-year-old prophetess Folake Olasode and school teacher Damilola Aboloyinijo, 31, were arraigned on Monday before a Lagos State Magistrate Court in Tinubu.
They were accused of preparing a fake protection charm and fraudulently obtaining 8 million naira from their victim.
The charges brought against the duo by the police include conspiracy, stealing, obtaining by false pretenses, unlawful assault, and breach of public peace.
The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Francis Igbinosa, stated that the defendants, along with others still at large, committed these offenses in May 2024 at 7A, Jide Agbalaya Street, Chevy-View, Lekki, Lagos.
According to Igbinosa, the defendants conspired to defraud Sarah Umeh by claiming to prepare protective charms and performing incisions on her and her three children to safeguard them from death—actions they knew to be fraudulent.
The defendants also allegedly assaulted the complainant and her children by making incisions with a razor blade under the pretext of providing protection.
Additionally, they were accused of causing a public disturbance by burning charms in Umeh’s compound.
The prosecutor indicated that these actions violate Sections 411, 314, 287, 172, 287, and 168 (d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their counsel, Moses Enema, requested bail on the grounds that they were first-time offenders and urged the court to consider leniency.
Magistrate Aderemi Gbajumo granted each defendant bail in the sum of 750,000 naira with two sureties. The sureties are required to have a valid means of livelihood and identification, as well as proof of Lagos State Residents’ Registration. The prosecutor was tasked with verifying the defendants’ addresses.
The court scheduled the trial for October 14, 2024.
