COPDEM condemns killing of 16 soldiers in Delta community

The chairman of Delta State chapter of Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), MR Ighere Dickson, has vehemently condemned the gruesome killing of soldiers in Okuoma community of the State.

NewsBand reported that 16 soldiers of 181 Amphibious Battalion who were on a peace mission in Okuama and Okoloba Communities in Ughelli South and Bomadi local government area of Delta State were killed by suspected militants.

Dickson in a statement he made available to this medium said such acts of violence against those who serve to protect the nation are abhorrent and must be met with swift justice.

He also condemned the reported reprisal attack by the military which resulted in the burning of the entire Okuoma community.

According to Dicksom, the destruction of civilian property and livelihoods is unacceptable and only perpetuates a cycle of violence and suffering.

The statement reads, “As the Chairman of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) in Ughelli South LGA of Delta state, it is with profound sadness and utmost condemnation that we address the recent tragic events unfolding in Okuoma community.

“We vehemently condemn the merciless killing of 16 soldiers on the river bank of Okuoma. Such acts of violence against those who serve to protect our nation are abhorrent and must be met with swift justice.

“Furthermore, we denounce in the strongest terms the reprisal attack by the military that resulted in the burning of the entire Okuoma community. The destruction of civilian property and livelihoods is unacceptable and only perpetuates a cycle of violence and suffering.

“In times of conflict, it is imperative that all parties uphold the principles of humanity and respect for human rights. Retaliatory actions that harm innocent civilians only serve to deepen divisions and escalate tensions.

“COPDEM Ughelli South chapter calls for a thorough investigation into these tragic events and urges all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek peaceful solutions to resolve grievances. We stand in solidarity with the people of Okuoma community and extend our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by these senseless acts of violence.

“As advocates for democracy and peace, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and the protection of human rights in our society.”
