Below is a compendium of Labour Party candidates or members who died or were killed before or during the 2023 general elections:

  1. Labour Party senatorial candidate, Oyibo Chukwu, 5 others killed in Enugu

    Unknown gunmen killed and burnt the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Enugu East Senatorial District, Mr. Oyibo Chukwu.

    Mr. Chukwu was killed 48 hours to the election at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area in the evening of February 23.

    The gunmen also killed five supporters who were with him inside his car.

    The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga, who confirmed the unfortunate incident, said that the gunmen shot him inside his vehicle with five other people with him and set the car ablaze.

  2. Labour Party Chairman, Onuigbo, dies on election day

    Labour Party Chairman in the Karshi district of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Valentine Onuigbo was reported dead.

    Family sources said Onuigbo died in his sleep in the wee hours of Saturday, February 25, same day Nigeria held presidential and National Assembly elections.

    The late Labour Party stalwart coordinated the pre-election activities of the party till late Friday night and was said to have been eagerly awaiting the commencement of the Saturday’s polls.

  3. Labour Party Zonal Chairman’s dies in auto accident

    Mallam Lawal Garba, the Labour Party zonal chairman in Kaduna State was reported dead following a fatal auto crash.

    Mallam Garba died on Monday night in car crash along the Kaduna-Zaria road on his way back home from the Labour party’s engagement with Northern stakeholders in Arewa House, Kaduna.

    Garba was said to have joined other party stakeholders to see off the Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and his running mate, Datti Baba Ahmed to Kaduna Airport enroute to Abuja and was returning home when the unfortunate incident occured.

  4. Gunmen kill Labour Party candidate in Imo

    The Imo State chapter of the Labour Party lost another candidate for Imo State House of Assembly in the 2023 general elections.

    Gunmen reportedly killed the party’s candidate for Onuimo Local Government Area, Mr. Christopher Elehu, popularly known as Wasco.

    The suspected gunmen were said to have struck in the early hours of Friday, shooting for over two hours.

    It was gatherrd that apart from killing him, the gunmen also set his country home ablaze and destroyed his properties, including a motorcycle.

  5. Imo Assembly Labour Party candidate, Chukwunonye Irouno dies

    The Labour Party candidate for Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State House of Assembly, Chukwunonye Irouno, died few days before the 2023 elections.

    Irouno, a famous master of ceremony in Owerri and the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs and Entertainment to a former governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, died on Monday night in his house in Owerri.

    Chukwunonye, who served as Special Adviser on Protocol to the former Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, slumped on Monday evening and was confirmed dead in the early hours of Tuesday.

    The candidate, who was supposed to be the official MC for Peter Obi’s rally in Owerri on Tuesday died after he and other Labour chieftains had finished inspecting Kanu Nwankwo sports stadium in Owerri, the venue for Obi’s campaign rally in the state on Tuesday.

    A friend of the deceased told our correspondent that the politician died few minutes after arriving his Owerri residence.

  6. Labour Party Women Leader shot dead in Kaduna

    Victoria Chintex, a leader of Labour Party (LP) in Kaura Local Government Aarea of Kaduna State, was shot dead by unknown gunmen.

    The Party’s Publicity Secretary in Southern Kaduna Senatorial Zone, Edward Buju, announced this in a statement.

    Buju said Chintex’s husband was also shot in the leg and sustained injury in the attack and received treatment at a medical facility.

    The statement reads: “The Southern Kaduna (Zone 3) Labour Party commiserates with the party chairman and his excos in Kaura local government area, over the untimely demise of our mother and sister, Mrs Victoria Chintex, Woman Leader, Kaura Local Government who was killed yesterday (Monday) by some unknown gunmen in her residence in Kaura.”

    Till date, no arrest has been made on Victoria’s killers.

  7. Top Labour Party chieftain dies in ghastly auto crash

    A member of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Omawumi Jemide-Lawal, from Delta State, died in a fatal road accident, aged 75.

    Reacting to Jemide-Lawal’s exit, the Labour Party presidential flag-bearer for the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi said the demise of the party’s prominent PCC member is a huge loss to the people of Delta state.

  8. Election: Political thugs kill 33-yr-old man, 2 others in Edo

    Thirty–three–year–old Idahosa Festus was one of the three persons, believed to be members of the Labour Party, shot dead during the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Edo State on February 25.

    Some armed political thugs had invaded ward 9, in Ogheghe community, in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

    The graduate of Mythological Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, left his base in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to vote in his home town.

    It was gathered that after casting his vote, Idahosa, popularly called Deve and other voters patiently waited behind for the votes to be counted.

    However, as the Senatorial votes were being counted, the armed men announced their presence with sporadic gunshots, causing everyone to scamper for safety.

    A bullet hit Idahosa who hailed from Egbokor Community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State and two other persons.

    He died at the spot, while one other victim reportedly died on the way to the hospital, while another man who was shot in the head is still battling for survival at an undisclosed hospital in Benin City, Edo State capital.

    A 41-year-old mother of three, Elizabeth Arigo Owie, was also killed after being shot in the chest by the thugs who invaded their polling unit during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

  9. Kaduna Labour Party House of Reps candidate escaped assassination as gunmen kill 2 persons

Gunmen on Friday night invaded the residence of the Kaduna State Labour Party’s (LP) House of Representatives candidate for Lere Federal Constituency, Suleiman Tambaya, killing two persons.

The incident occurred at about 10:00p.m at Tambaya’s residence at Gure village in Lere Local Government Area of the state when he was away at a political meeting in Kaduna, the state capital.

The assassination attempt on Tambaya came barely three months after gunmen attacked and killed the Party’s women leader, Mrs Victoria Chimtex, in her residence in Kaura Local Government Area of the state in November 2022.

Meanwhile, Tambaya while narrating the attempted assassination on him few weeks to the 2023 general elections, said that for divine intervention and the prompt response from the members of the community and local vigilante, it would have been a “different story.” Read more.
